**Georgian Parliament to Adopt British Media Standards**
The Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, has announced that his country will adopt the British standard for media legislation. This decision comes after a review of how foreign funds are used to influence media outlets and spread misinformation.
**A Challenge to Fake News**
Papuashvili said that fighting fake news is one of the main goals of modern democracies. He noted that the damaging effects of fake news can be seen in Georgia, where some media outlets have been found to be promoting a specific narrative or propaganda on behalf of their funders.
**No New Standards Needed**
When asked about new standards proposed by the “Georgian Dream” party, Papuashvili said that common sense and existing codes of ethics are sufficient. He argued that people should not lie and verify information before publishing it.
**Stricter Laws? Not Necessarily**
Papuashvili also clarified that the media laws in Georgia will not become stricter, but rather more effective at preventing disinformation from deceiving and confusing the public. The goal is to ensure that accurate information reaches the public, rather than fake news and propaganda.
**American Revelations**
The Chairman of the Georgian Parliament also mentioned that American officials showed them invoices for money transferred to various media outlets to influence their content. He said that this was an example of how some media outlets serve their funders rather than the truth and the public.
