For over thirty years, we have stood side by side with Georgia, with you — and have shared with you the benefits we have accumulated over the years. We have done so because we believe in Georgia, just as population of Georgia believes in Europe. However, we also hear baseless accusations. We hear the voices that undermine our long-standing friendship and that aim to divide us. Voices that portray the EU as enemy – this is unfair! – Pawel Herczyński, EU Ambassador to Georgia, said at the event marking Europe Day in Kutaisi.
The Ambassador expressed hope that the Georgian authorities will return to respecting the principles on which the European Union is founded.
“After Tbilisi and Batumi, I am delighted to mark Europe Day here, in Kutaisi.
Throughout the history, Kutaisi has been an intellectual and cultural centre of the country; birthplace of truly European ideas. Kutaisi is a city of both traditions and modernity, preserving an impressive past and at the same time, striving for innovation.
This is exactly what Europe is all about – constant progress toward development by respecting each other’s unique culture and traditions.
The EU member states also have a great history. It is precisely this history that reminds us of „who we were and who we are“ today: a unity of peace, economic prosperity and shared values.
We still hope that the Georgian authorities will return to respecting the principles on which the European Union is founded.
Do not lose hope. We are not giving up either, because we feel support and friendship of the population of Georgia. Today is yet another clear example of this!
As today, we still celebrate being together, our joint achievements and shared history. Hoping that we will celebrate our joint future as well.
Go forward Georgia, go forward!”, said the Ambassador.
