**EU Must Take Action Against Pro-Russian Mafia in Georgia**
A top European Union official has called on the bloc to take decisive action against a pro-Russian mafia group in Georgia. MEP Nathalie Loiseau made the statement as concerns grow about the worsening human rights situation in the country.
Loiseau pointed out that the EU had been too passive in addressing the issue, which she witnessed firsthand as an election observer. She accused Bidzina Ivanishvili, the head of the pro-Russian group, of using intimidation and repression to maintain power.
**The Situation in Georgia is Getting Out of Control**
Georgia has long been seen as a beacon of democracy in the Caucasus region. However, Loiseau said that under Ivanishvili’s leadership, the country was becoming increasingly authoritarian. She cited the persecution of NGOs, the arrest of political prisoners, and the silencing of media outlets as examples of this trend.
Loiseau also drew parallels between Georgia’s situation and that of Belarus, a country with a predominantly pro-European population but ruled by a pro-Russian regime. She warned that if the EU did not take action soon, it would be too late to save Georgia from becoming another dictatorship in the region.
**Why Does Ivanishvili Still Have the Legion of Honor?**
Loiseau also raised questions about Ivanishvili’s connections with France and other European countries. She pointed out that despite being a key figure in a pro-Russian regime, Ivanishvili still holds the prestigious Legion of Honor award from France.
**Air France Must Break Ties with Complicit Airline**
Loiseau also criticized Air France for its continued partnership with an airline complicit in the kidnapping of an opposition leader. She said that this was not only morally reprehensible but also a clear sign of Air France’s willingness to evade sanctions against Russia.
**The EU Must Act Now**
Loiseau concluded by calling on the EU to take concrete action against Ivanishvili and his associates. She urged EU countries to impose visa restrictions and economic sanctions on those responsible for the repression in Georgia.
“We, the French people, must ask ourselves the right questions,” she said. “Why does Bidzina Ivanishvili still have the Legion of Honor? Why is Air France still partnering with an airline that is complicit in the kidnapping of an opponent?”
