“Giorgi Gakharia is a person who is a chronic traitor,” said Irakli Pavlenishvili, Deputy General Secretary of the “United National Movement,” regarding the “Gakharia – For Georgia” party, which has decided to enter the 11th convocation of Parliament.
As Pavlenishvili told journalists, the essence of Giorgi Gakharia’s tragedy lies in the fact that neither the government recognizes him as part of the government nor the opposition as part of the opposition.
“He first betrayed the team he was part of – Ivanishvili’s team – then betrayed the opposition. I think he later betrayed his last partner as well. I can’t say for sure; you’d have to ask them. In the end, this is a person trying to return to the ‘Georgian Dream’ fold, though I don’t think they’re particularly welcoming him back into that fold. Therefore, his so-called political career is indeed tragic. Ultimately, he is not perceived as opposition by the opposition, and I don’t think he is perceived as government by the government either – that is the essence of his tragedy,” Pavlenishvili stated.
In addition, he also spoke about the banning of parties.
According to Irakli Pavlenishvili, “this is one of the most authoritarian and draconian laws this country has ever seen.”
“Laws are being passed in Georgia that strip meaning not only from political activity but from critical thinking in general. By the same logic, they could pass a law prohibiting critically minded people from walking on the street because all rights are already restricted. This is a textbook example of establishing dictatorship in our country – not just here, but likely to be included in educational courses in other countries as well, because I cannot recall such a precedent where not only dozens or hundreds of politicians are banned from political activity, but according to their own calculations, hundreds of thousands of citizens are stripped of their active electoral rights – the right to vote. The parties they voted for in the previous elections will simply cease to exist and will no longer have the means to exist. Therefore, of course, this is one of the most authoritarian, draconian laws this country has ever seen,” Pavlenishvili stated.
