Parliament Changes Rules to Help 3 MPs Form Opposition Group
The rules that govern the Georgian Parliament are being changed. This will allow three lawmakers, Ilia Injia, Varlam Liparteliani, and Nika Elisashvili, to form a group in opposition to the current majority.
The rules were first changed in 2019, when the People’s Power party had more than seven MPs leave. At that time, the rules were updated so that any group of seven lawmakers who left the party could form their own group in Parliament.
Now, the same thing is happening again. Ilia Injia, Varlam Liparteliani, and Nika Elisashvili will be leaving the current majority party, Georgian Dream, and becoming an opposition group.
A member of Parliament from the People’s Power party suggested that instead of seven MPs, three should be able to form a group. This change was agreed upon by the Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.
This is the second time in history that such a rule has been changed. It was first done for the 10th convocation of the Parliament, which allowed a group called the “Political Group” to be formed. This group had the same rights and privileges as any other parliamentary faction.
