**Tougher Drug Laws Planned in Georgia**
A top leader of the ruling party, Mamuka Mdinaradze, said yesterday that people convicted of drug-related crimes may face “mandatory treatment” as a punishment. This means they will have to undergo special medical care.
Mdinardze said judges will decide if this is necessary for each case. He thinks it’s good for the person’s health and helps prevent others from committing similar crimes.
The government wants to make laws stricter against drug dealers. If someone sells small amounts of drugs, they could get 12-20 years in prison or even life imprisonment.
**Other Changes Planned**
Using drugs or refusing a test can lead to losing driving privileges, the right to work in public service, and owning a gun.
The government says it will target dealers especially hard, treating them like murderers.
**Criticism and Protests**
Some people are protesting against these new laws. They claim police planted drugs on some protesters who were detained.
This has already been criticized for focusing too much on punishment rather than helping those with addiction problems.
