“The prosecution is taking legally sound steps to investigate sabotage – the state will be uncompromising toward any violation of the law!” stated David Matikashvili, a deputy from the “Georgian Dream” party, regarding the freezing of the bank accounts of seven non-governmental organizations.
According to Matikashvili, “those individuals and forces that issue destructive instructions from abroad and orchestrate events do not rest.”
“They are trying to justify the destructive actions of these NGOs. The state will be uncompromising! Our country and its government will be resolute against any actions that, outside the framework of the Constitution, attempt to oppose the government, misinform the public, or engage in violent or forceful actions against the people and society. Of course, decisions will be made in full compliance with the law and within its framework,” Matikashvili stated.
Matikashvili also noted that the admission by former USAID head Samantha Power—that USAID spent enormous financial resources in various countries to support desired governments and remove undesirable ones—confirms the accuracy of the “Georgian Dream” government’s statements.
Matikashvili further commented that the silence of the Trump administration toward the Georgian government raises questions.
“What Power admitted is that for years, millions of dollars and vast financial resources were spent by USAID in various countries, including Ukraine and Moldova, to support desired governments and remove undesirable ones. The ‘Georgian Dream’ government is precisely the kind of government that has long aligned with the policy declared by Donald Trump and openly states that these funds from USAID were used against democracy, to organize revolutions and chaos. The silence from the U.S. administration and its open support naturally raise many questions and certain considerations in this regard,” Matikashvili stated.
The Tbilisi City Court granted the prosecution’s motion to freeze the bank accounts of seven non-governmental organizations: the Civil Society Foundation, the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED), the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI), Defenders of Democracy, Georgia’s Democratic Initiative (GDI), Safary, and the Social Justice Center.
According to the statement issued by the Prosecutor’s Office, the case concerns an ongoing investigation into allegations of sabotage, attempted sabotage under aggravating circumstances, aiding hostile activities by a foreign organization or an organization under foreign control, and mobilizing finances for activities aimed against Georgia’s constitutional order and national security.
