**Ukrainian President Zelenskyy Arrives in Germany Amid Taurus Missile Debates**
In a significant development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy landed in Berlin on May 28, amidst growing debates over the potential delivery of German Taurus missiles to Ukraine. According to reports from Ukrinform, Zelenskyy’s plane touched down at Schönefeld Airport.
The visit comes as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz seeks to discuss possible steps for further technical negotiations between Ukraine and Russia during their personal meeting. This development has sparked renewed speculation about the potential delivery of Taurus missiles, which can strike targets at distances of up to 500 kilometers. Before becoming chancellor, Merz signaled that he would overturn his predecessor Olaf Scholz’s ban on delivering the missiles to Ukraine.
Kyiv has been pressing Germany to provide the Taurus missiles to strike targets deep inside Russian territory, with Scholz having previously ruled out the move due to escalation fears. The policy has become a point of contention between the CDU/CSU and their Social Democratic coalition partners. The German chancellor declared earlier this week that Berlin and other Western partners have lifted all range restrictions on arms provided to Ukraine, which some viewed as a signal of an incoming policy change on Taurus missiles.
The Taurus missile is the only long-range German weapon that Ukraine has requested from Germany. In contrast, Ukraine previously received long-range missiles from the US, UK, and France, including ATACMS, Storm Shadow, and SCALP missiles. These were initially permitted to be used only against Russian military forces in occupied Ukrainian territories but were later eased by the Biden administration and other allies to allow for use against Russian military targets on Russian territory.
Germany’s support has become crucial for Kyiv as US backing grows increasingly uncertain under President Donald Trump. The visit comes at a critical juncture, with Germany’s stance on Taurus missiles set to have significant implications for Ukraine’s ability to strike deep into Russian territory.
