**Ukraine’s War Toll Rises**
Over 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in combat since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. President Volodymyr Zelensky made this statement in an interview with NBC.
This is a significant increase from the previous estimate of over 45,000 soldier deaths. The president also reported that nearly 380,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been injured during the war.
Many Ukrainian troops are still missing or being held captive by Russia. President Zelensky did not give an exact number, but said it was in the “tens of thousands”.
**Russia’s War Losses**
Ukraine estimates that Russia has lost a total of 859,920 soldiers since the start of the war. This figure includes dead, wounded, missing, and captured soldiers.
However, Russia does not release its own casualty figures. A recent report from Ukraine said that Russia had received 48,000 requests to identify missing soldiers.
**Foreign Mercenaries**
To reduce casualties among Russian citizens, Moscow has recruited foreign fighters. These include hundreds of Yemeni mercenaries who have been sent to fight in Ukraine.
Russia also cooperated with North Korea, which reportedly sent 10,000-12,000 soldiers to aid Russia’s war effort against Ukraine.
