**EU Summit to Focus on Ukraine’s Security**
The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, has invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to a special EU summit. The meeting will take place on March 6 and will focus on “European defense and Ukraine.”
According to Costa, the summit aims to make “first decisions for the short-term” that will help Europe become more sovereign, capable, and better equipped. A major goal of the summit is to prepare EU countries for a possible European contribution to security guarantees in Ukraine.
**Shifts in US-EU Relations**
The summit comes at a time when there are significant changes in US-European relations. US President Donald Trump has signaled that he expects Europe to take on more responsibility for defending Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.
However, a recent minerals deal between the US and Ukraine does not contain specific security guarantees. Ukrainian President Zelensky said on February 26 that these guarantees will be discussed in future negotiations.
**Zelensky’s Schedule**
President Zelensky is scheduled to visit Washington on February 28 to sign the minerals agreement with Trump. He also plans to attend the European Security Summit in the UK on March 2.
The EU summit on March 6 will provide an opportunity for Europe to discuss its role in Ukraine’s security and take more responsibility for defending the country against Russia’s aggression.
