Russia is set to celebrate Victory Day on May 9, a public holiday that marks the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Nazi Germany during World War II. However, not everyone agrees with Russia’s version of history. President Vladimir Putin has used these celebrations as an opportunity to promote his own narrative and justify aggression against Ukraine.
**What Putin Doesn’t Want You to Know**
But what is often left out of Putin’s story is the crucial role that other countries played in defeating Nazi Germany. According to author and historian Andrej Lushnycky, who spoke with The Kyiv Independent, Putin’s version of history omits major factors such as the significant contributions made by the Polish resistance and the bravery of Soviet soldiers who fought alongside them.
**US Support for Ukraine**
The US has also shown its support for Ukraine by providing financial assistance to help pay for reconstruction efforts. This move may also have a strategic benefit, as it gives the US greater visibility over future Russian energy flows.
**Ukraine’s Struggle Continues**
Despite this support, Ukraine continues to face significant challenges. In April, at least 19 children were killed and 78 injured in a single month – the highest verified monthly number of child casualties since June 2022. This highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the country.
