**US President Trump on Ukraine and Nato**
US President Donald Trump said it is unlikely that Ukraine will join Nato, a military alliance of 30 countries. This was stated as he announced plans to start peace talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Trump also mentioned the need for European members of Nato to increase their defence spending. He said they would have to cover most of the costs of supporting Ukraine.
**What is Nato?**
Nato, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was formed in 1949 by 12 countries. Its main goal has always been to keep Europe safe from expansion by the Soviet Union and other communist countries.
Today, Nato includes 30 countries across Europe and North America. Its purpose remains the same: to protect its members from threats from outside.
