On February 20, US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said that Ukraine needs to calm down and agree to the minerals deal. He told Fox News that Ukraine should sign the agreement presented by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on February 12.
**Ukraine Rejects Deal Over Lack of Security Guarantees**
Kyiv had earlier refused to sign the deal because it lacks concrete security guarantees. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine is open to investment but needs assurances that its interests are protected.
**US Seeks Control of Ukrainian Resources**
The US wants a 50% interest in Ukraine’s natural resources, including critical minerals and oil and gas. They also want stakes in ports and other infrastructure through a joint investment fund.
