Serbian Government Promises Action Against Parliament Violence

The government of Serbia has promised to take action against lawmakers who caused chaos in parliament on Tuesday.

Opposition MPs threw smoke bombs and broke fire extinguishers during the session. Three female opposition MPs, including one who is pregnant, were hurt when objects were thrown at them by both sides of the hall.

A ruling party MP even threw a smoke bomb back at an opposition MP, hitting a female colleague from their own party.

Internal Affairs Minister Ivica Dacic said that everyone involved in the incident would be held accountable under the law. He said that immunity granted to MPs wouldn’t protect them.

MPs have some protection from prosecution for certain crimes, but this can be lifted by a parliament committee if needed.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic also spoke out against the violence, calling it the behavior of bullies and hooligans. He wanted criminal charges to be brought against those responsible.
