**Police Officers in Serbia May Not Attend Work on Saturday**
A mass protest is set to take place in Belgrade, Serbia on Saturday. But some police officers may not show up for work that day.
According to sources close to the police, many officers are unhappy about being asked to deal with protesters. One senior officer said he would never order his men to attack students. He added that he couldn’t speak for all officers, but mentioned a few “dishonorable” ones who might not behave.
The mood in the police is tense and some officers seem unwilling to take orders. A commander was quoted as saying he wouldn’t allow his men to do anything against protesters. This shows that the police are no longer seen as enemies of the people, unlike in the 1990s.
Some senior officers also hinted at corruption within their ranks. They said that those who got jobs because they were friends with politicians would follow orders without question. But professionals like them might not listen to everything they’re told.
The Belgrade Police Brigade is considered the main force for dealing with protesters, but its officers seem to be unhappy and taking days off. Some even claim that public transport will not be working on Saturday, which could make it harder for people to get to the protest.
