In a significant blow to Russia’s military operations in Ukraine, the 427th Regiment of unmanned systems has successfully targeted and destroyed a combat-modified T-40 tractor near Chasiv Yar, Donetsk Oblast. The operation was confirmed through video footage published by the regiment’s press service on May 3.
**Russia’s Desperate Measures**
As Ukraine continues its large-scale offensive operations, Russia is facing significant personnel and equipment losses. Unable to rapidly replenish their stock of combat armored vehicles, Russian forces have resorted to using unconventional means for assault actions and supplies. This includes mopeds, motorcycles, golf carts, civilian cars, and buses – even donkeys have been documented in multiple videos being used for military logistics.
**The T-40 Tractor: A Soviet-Era Farm Vehicle**
The farm vehicle targeted by the Ukrainian forces was identified as a Soviet-era T-40 tractor. Produced from the 1960s to mid-1990s in Russia’s Lipetsk, the T-40 was originally designed for fieldwork, transport, and general-purpose farm tasks. However, Russian forces had repurposed this vehicle by armor-plating it with sheet metal and replacing its windshield with a metal shield featuring a slit.
**FPV Drone Strike: A Series of Hits**
According to reports, the initial FPV drone strike failed to ignite the tractor, but its driver managed to escape. It took three hits from the unmanned system to finally destroy the vehicle, which caught fire after the third hit struck the engine area. The driver reportedly evacuated before the final impact.
**The “Drone Line” Project: A New Era in Ukrainian Military Operations**
This strike is a testament to Ukraine’s growing expertise in unmanned systems and military operations. In March 2025, the Raroh Regiment became part of the newly launched “Drone Line” project, aimed at forming specialized units with advanced equipment. This initiative seeks to create impenetrable zones on the front lines, with units such as Magyar’s Birds Brigade, K-2, Achilles, and the Phoenix drone division of Ukraine’s Border Guard working together towards this goal.
