**Ukrainian Drones Target Russian Military Train in Occupied Zaporizhzhia Oblast**
A devastating drone strike carried out by Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) has left a key railway supply line in flames. The attack, which took place on May 24, targeted a Russian military train carrying fuel in occupied Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
According to reports, the HUR’s drone unit successfully struck the moving train while it was transporting fuel for Russian military equipment. At least three fuel tankers were destroyed, severely disrupting the occupiers’ logistics. The operation is part of a broader armed campaign aimed at “obstructing and paralyzing Russian military logistics” across occupied Ukrainian territories.
The footage of the strike, released on HUR’s official website, shows explosions engulfing the tankers. This attack is just one example of Ukraine’s escalating air campaign against Russian strategic targets such as ammunition depots, command centers, military factories, oil processing and storage facilities in Russia and the Russian-occupied territory.
**Increasing Pressure on Rail Logistics**
The destruction of this key railway supply line has further complicated Russian efforts to transfer and support troops in Zaporizhzhia Oblast and Crimea. The route itself sustained damage during the attack, making it even more challenging for Russian forces to maintain their logistics chain.
Russian forces have been trying to restore and expand rail infrastructure on occupied territory, particularly in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts. They plan to construct a new railway connection between Rostov-on-Don and occupied Crimea through Zaporizhzhia’s Berdiansk, reduce reliance on the Crimean bridge, and improve transport safety for military cargo.
**Escalating Campaign**
This attack marks another significant blow to Russia’s logistics chain in Ukraine. In the first half of December 2024, multiple sabotage acts targeted rail infrastructure inside Russia, including the destruction of railway tracks and the burning of five locomotives. This escalation highlights the ongoing efforts by both sides to disrupt each other’s supply lines.
As the conflict continues, it is clear that the war in Ukraine has entered a new phase, with both parties engaging in increasingly sophisticated and complex operations to gain an advantage. The fate of occupied territories and the ability of Russian forces to maintain their presence will depend on their ability to adapt to these changing circumstances.
