**Russia’s Hidden Arsenal: Over 10,000 Chemical Attacks on Ukraine**
The war in Ukraine has taken a dark turn, with Russia using chemical weapons against Ukrainian forces on an unprecedented scale. According to the Ukraine Security Service (SBU), Russian troops have carried out over 10,000 chemical attacks since the start of the full-scale invasion.
This alarming trend was revealed by the SBU on July 30, as they reported that Russian troops have repeatedly used prohibited chemical agents, including K-51, RGR, and RG-VO aerosol grenades loaded with CS (chlorobenzylidene malonitrile) and CN (chloroacetophenone). These agents are banned under the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention, which Russia ratified.
The use of such agents is not only against international law but also poses a significant threat to the lives of Ukrainian soldiers. The SBU reported that the most common method of deployment involves first-person view (FPV) drones dropping chemical munitions directly onto Ukrainian defensive positions. When detonated, these agents cause severe irritation to the eyes and respiratory system, often forcing Ukrainian troops to leave their protected positions under active fire.
This tactic is a clear escalation in Russia’s use of chemical warfare. In May 2024, the U.S. State Department raised alarm about Russia’s use of chloropicrin – a chemical capable of killing in confined spaces – in Ukraine. This led to sanctions being imposed on over 280 Russian individuals and entities.
**Lack of Detection Equipment Exposed Ukrainian Forces**
In the past, Ukrainian forces struggled to identify the specific agents used due to a lack of detection equipment. However, with the documentation of more than 10,000 chemical attacks, it is clear that this is no longer an issue. The sheer scale of these attacks underscores the threat posed by Russia’s use of chemical weapons.
**International Condemnation Needed**
The international community must condemn Russia’s actions and take concrete steps to prevent further atrocities. As a signatory to the Chemical Weapons Convention, Russia has a responsibility to uphold international law and respect the safety of all individuals involved in the conflict.
