**Ukraine Takes Drone Warfare to the Next Level**
In a move that reflects the growing importance of drones in modern warfare, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) has announced the establishment of a new command group. This development comes as both Ukraine and Russia continue to rely heavily on drone technology for surveillance, long-range strikes, and tactical battlefield firepower.
The new formation brings together all military units of the USF with the Drone Line project, launched by President Volodymyr Zelensky in February this year. The Drone Line aims to coordinate and expand five of Ukraine’s strongest drone units, creating a more unified and effective drone force.
According to a statement from the USF, the new command umbrella was created to “improve the efficiency of management, transform the Forces, and adapt to the requirements of modern warfare.” This means that all units will operate within a single chain of command, with a defined structure and a common vision for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) tactics.
**A New Era in Drone Warfare**
The Unmanned Systems Forces were created as a separate branch of Ukraine’s military in June 2024. At the time, Ukraine’s strongest existing drone units served in other branches of the defense forces, including the Ground Forces, National Guard, and the Security Service of Ukraine. The newly-created group will be led by Major Robert Brovdi, better known by his callsign Magyar.
Brovdi had previously served as commander of the eponymous Magyar’s Birds Unmanned Systems Brigade, a founding member of the Drone Line initiative and one of the most consistently high-performing drone units in the Ukrainian military. The USF has also carried out hundreds of operations deep within Russian territory.
**A World-First Phenomenon**
Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces is a world-first phenomenon that works to improve the country’s drone operations, creating drone-specific units, ramping up training, increasing drone production, and advancing innovation. The USF has been at the forefront of Ukraine’s drone efforts, carrying out complex operations deep within Russian territory.
**A Competitive Advantage**
The establishment of a new command group for the USF is a significant development that will allow Ukraine to further integrate its drone forces and enhance their effectiveness on the battlefield. This move comes as Russia also announced the creation of its own separate drone branch in the military, highlighting the growing importance of drones in modern warfare.
