**Ukraine Gets Green Light to Strike Russia, and It’s No Longer Enough**
The German government’s announcement that it will no longer impose range limits on weapons sent to Ukraine is a significant shift in the West’s approach to supporting the country. This move, combined with similar steps by the US, France, and the UK, finally lifts the taboo on using Western arms for military purposes within Russia’s borders.
The delay in sending aid packages has had severe consequences for Ukraine. Last year, delays led to a “missile crisis” and catastrophic damage to the country’s energy sector. Russia took advantage of Ukraine’s inability to reach its launch sites, methodically destroying power stations with 63 drones and 88 missiles.
**Consequences of Delayed Aid**
The delayed aid packages forced Ukrainians to live with prolonged power cuts lasting up to 4-6 hours last summer. This not only caused inconvenience but also had a major impact on the economy, social stability, and national morale.
Today, the situation has worsened. According to The Economist, a year ago, 30 drones per night was seen as unusual. Now, hundreds of Shahed drones and dozens of missiles are the new reality. Just last month, Russia fired 298 drones and 69 missiles at Ukraine, one of the all-time records.
**Russia’s Advancements**
The Kremlin is not only increasing its arsenal but also improving its technology. Its ability to launch large numbers of drones and missiles has created a challenge for Ukraine’s air defense systems. Moreover, the number of targets has outpaced the production rate of interceptor drones by Ukraine’s partners.
**The Need for a New Strategy**
In this light, striking at enemy launch sites before they enter Ukrainian airspace becomes the only logical solution. This will not only allow Kyiv to defend itself but also counterattack and reduce pressure on its air defense systems.
Kyiv’s partners have the resources needed to implement this new strategy: confiscation of frozen Russian assets. Billions of dollars can be used to purchase necessary weapons for Ukraine or secure a loan through the Safe Loan instrument proposed by Mr Kubilius, which provides lending to Ukraine secured by confiscated Russian assets.
**Conclusion**
There is no time for hesitation. A new strategy with the right arms and funding is the way to truly defend Ukraine and bring peace. As the situation stands, it’s clear that merely defending against enemy attacks will not suffice; a more proactive approach is required to secure the future of Ukraine.
