**UK and EU Impose New Sanctions on Russia**

The British government has announced 100 new sanctions against Russia, aiming to increase pressure on Moscow as it continues to reject a ceasefire in Ukraine. These measures are part of the European Union’s (EU) 17th sanctions package, which targets entities supporting Russia’s military machine, energy exports, and information war.

**Sanctions Aim to Disrupt Russia’s War Efforts**

The new sanctions specifically target financial institutions that help Russia evade existing restrictions, as well as companies involved in the production of weapons such as Iskander missiles. These missiles are often used in strikes against civilians in Ukraine. The UK government stressed that the sanctions come in response to the largest Russian drone strike against Ukraine, which took place on May 18 and involved 273 drones.

**US Stays Out**

In a surprise move, US President Donald Trump announced that Washington does not plan to impose additional sanctions on Russia. This decision is meant to avoid disrupting peace efforts, despite calls from European leaders for increased pressure on Moscow. Trump’s stance has raised questions about the level of coordination between the US and its allies in implementing economic measures against Russia.

**UK Vows to Continue Support**

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said that the new sanctions demonstrate London’s commitment to helping Ukraine defend itself and restricting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war machine. The UK government is also reviewing the possibility of lowering the price cap on Russian crude oil, which currently stands at $60 per barrel.

**European Leaders Unite**

In response to Russia’s continued rejection of a ceasefire, European leaders have threatened Moscow with additional sanctions unless Putin commits to peace efforts. A new EU sanctions package is reportedly in the works, and President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that this package will be “strong.”
