U.S. President Donald Trump claims he has been tough on Russia.
Trump made this statement to Fox News on March 9. He was responding to criticism that his administration is being friendly with the Kremlin.
The U.S. government has stopped sharing intelligence and giving military aid to Ukraine. This is because of a full-scale war in eastern Ukraine, which is entering its fourth year. Russian forces are getting stronger.
Trump said he had been tough on Russia during his first term as president. He mentioned that he put sanctions on businesses that helped build the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. This pipeline brings Russian gas into Europe.
“I’m the one who put sanctions on Russia,” Trump said. “I’m the one who gave the javelins against Russia.”
However, Trump did not talk much about the current situation between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine. He accused President Volodymyr Zelensky of not being grateful to the U.S.
When asked if he was comfortable with risking Ukraine’s survival by stopping U.S. support, Trump said it might not survive anyway.
