US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to talk soon. This is because of ongoing discussions about a possible ceasefire in the three-year war in Ukraine.
A US envoy, Steve Witkoff, met with Putin on Thursday in Moscow. He told CNN that he expects both presidents to speak this week. The talks come after last week’s agreement between the US and Ukraine to propose a 30-day ceasefire to Russia. Putin said he supports a ceasefire but also made some tough demands for peace.
Witkoff thinks Trump and Putin will have a good and positive conversation this week. He also said that teams of US negotiators will meet with counterparts from both Ukraine and Russia during the coming week. Witkoff believes a deal can be reached in the coming weeks.
During his election campaign, Trump promised to end the war on “day one” of his administration. The war started when Russia invaded Ukraine three years ago. Less than a month after being inaugurated, Trump had a 90-minute call with Putin about starting negotiations to end the war.
Witkoff declined to answer questions about how Russian-occupied land in Ukraine could be addressed in a potential deal. He said Trump is actively participating in the diplomatic talks and getting updates in real time. The president is involved in every important decision, according to Witkoff.
