**Ukrainian Soldier’s Miraculous Escape from Russian Attack**
In a remarkable story of survival and bravery, Ukrainian infantry soldier Serhii has shared the details of how he managed to escape a 24-hour ordeal in which he was trapped in a basement, wounded and unarmed. The incident took place in August 2023, in the village of Urozhaine in Donetsk Oblast.
Serhii, also known as Kosyi (The Crooked), was part of the 58th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade, which has played a key role in Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression in eastern Ukraine. On that fateful day, Serhii found himself severely wounded and abandoned in a basement after a Russian assault.
**A Lucky Break**
In a stunning turn of events, two Russian soldiers entered the basement where Serhii was lying helpless. They left their rifle nearby, turned their backs on him, and began barricading the door. It was this careless moment that would prove to be Serhii’s salvation. “Pure luck, really,” he recalls. “They came in without grenades, tossed their rifles down, and started barricading the door with their backs to me. While they were busy barricading, I ’emptied into their backs’.”
**A Day of Constant Shelling**
Serhii lay in the basement for almost a full day, subjected to constant shelling from Russian forces trying to retake the shelter. Ukrainian drones, artillery, and mortars held off the attackers, but the situation was precarious. The soldier heard wounded Russian comrades screaming, suggesting that they were finished off by their own side with grenades.
**Evacuation and Awards**
The next day, bad weather complicated further attacks, and Serhii was eventually evacuated. His bravery didn’t go unnoticed, as he was awarded the Cross of Military Merit and the Order for Courage, 3rd Class, for his exemplary service during that fight.
**A Soldier’s Perspective**
Despite receiving awards, Serhii believes that the highest reward is not medals but life itself. “The most important medal is staying alive,” he says. “I always tell my comrades: never give up. Fight to the end—that is the only way to win.”
