**Georgia’s Ruling Party Fears a Free Press, MEP Says**
The ruling Georgian Dream party is afraid of a free press because it knows it can only survive in the shadows, according to MEP Tobias Cremer (Germany). He made this statement during a debate in the European Parliament on the case of Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti.
**Media Freedom Under Threat**
More than 400 journalists, opposition representatives, and ordinary citizens are being detained and tortured in Georgia. This is not an isolated incident, according to Cremer. He emphasized that media freedom is a democratic necessity, shining a light on corruption and autocracy.
**Imprisonment of Mzia Amaglobeli**
Mzia Amaglobeli, one of the country’s most respected journalists, has been imprisoned for over 150 days. This is just one example of how the Georgian authorities are suppressing freedom of expression. The European Parliament is currently debating her case and will vote on a resolution related to media freedom in Georgia.
**The Power of a Free Press**
MEP Cremer highlighted that the light of a free press and a free society is the most powerful weapon against tyranny. He called on the Georgian authorities to come out of the shadows, drop politically motivated accusations, and allow the Georgian people to freely choose their future.
**Oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili’s Influence**
Cremer also mentioned that oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili is hiding in the shadow of the Putin regime. This regime uses disinformation, intimidation, and manipulation to maintain control. The MEP emphasized that Georgians will never choose to live like Russians do.
**European Parliament Takes Action**
The European Parliament is taking action on this issue by debating and voting on a resolution related to media freedom in Georgia. The resolution specifically addresses the case of Mzia Amaglobeli and the suppression of freedom of expression in the country.
