Sweden Investigates Damaged Undersea Cable

The Swedish authorities have launched an investigation into the damage of a telecoms cable in the Baltic Sea. The fiber-optic cable, which runs between Finland and Germany, was damaged near Gotland Island.

This is not the first time this cable has been damaged. It happened three times recently. The Finnish telecom operator Cinia said that the damage was minor and did not affect the cable’s work.

The Swedish Coast Guard recorded the incident on February 20. However, it is unclear when exactly it occurred.

Sweden’s Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, said that his country takes all reports of damaged infrastructure seriously. He believes these incidents should be seen in the context of a serious security situation.

NATO has increased its presence in the Baltic Sea due to recent cases of damaged undersea cables and other infrastructure. They have deployed more patrol vessels to prevent potential sabotage.

Some experts think that Russian-linked vessels might have been involved in the damage. However, others believe it was just an accident.
