**Journalist’s Health Condition Worsens in Georgia**
Afgan Sadigov, a critical Azerbaijani journalist on hunger strike for 142 days, has seen his health condition deteriorate significantly. According to the Social Justice Center (SJC), Sadigov went on an absolute hunger strike on February 2, after months of refusing food. This drastic move followed a court ruling that extended his pretrial detention by three months.
Sadigov’s weight loss is extreme, with him now weighing only 56 kilograms, down from over 96 kilograms before his detention. His health is at critical risk, and the damage could soon become irreversible, the SJC warned. On February 5, Sadigov was unconscious for several hours but has since been stabilized by doctors.
**International Concerns**
Sadigov’s case has raised concerns among international human rights organizations. The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) had issued an interim measure on January 14 prohibiting his transfer to Azerbaijan. Despite this, the Tbilisi City Court extended Sadigov’s pretrial detention by three months.
The SJC continues to protect Sadigov’s interests and will provide updates on his condition and the progress of the case at the European Court of Human Rights. International human rights organizations have called on Georgia not to extradite Sadigov to Azerbaijan, citing politically motivated charges against him.
