Any alternative agenda, fabricated and false reality, was ended by yesterday’s events—it is symbolic that yesterday, those few thousand agitators waving foreign flags were defeated precisely at Freedom Square, stated the Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, during a briefing at the party’s office.
According to him, yesterday Georgia avoided Maidanization, bloodshed, chaos, and a return to a dark past.
Furthermore, as Papuashvili noted, “the most shameful, cowardly, and unconscionable participants of yesterday’s events must face the consequences of what they sowed and tried to reap.”
“Yesterday, elections were held in Georgia, which once again put an end to any speculation about who the Georgian people are, where they stand, how many they are, and who can speak on their behalf. The Georgian people went to the polls yesterday, and it was clear that this was more than just a local self-government election. Yesterday, the Georgian people supported the Georgian state, the country’s Constitution, the rule of law, democracy, and national interests. Gratitude is due to every voter who went to the polls, regardless of who they voted for. Gratitude is due to each of our supporters who strengthened our government. And special thanks go to every candidate involved in the ‘Georgian Dream’ election campaign and the members of the election headquarters who brought our main message to the voters. Any alternative agenda, fabricated and false reality, was ended by yesterday’s events.
At the same time, yesterday Georgia avoided Maidanization, bloodshed, chaos, and a return to a dark past. We avoided it not because some extremist or their foreign instructor came to their senses. We avoided it because law enforcement protected our country. Thanks to every police officer, special forces member, security service employee, and government protection staff who, at the risk of their lives and health, prevented internal and external enemies from breaching the boundaries of our country’s peaceful development. Internal and external forces, which have been trying to destabilize Georgia for years, attempted a decisive battle against the Georgian people and were bitterly defeated.
Yesterday, we saw people controlled from abroad who were ready, driven by their ambitions, hatred, and desire for revenge, to overthrow the legitimately elected government and, along with it, the future of Georgia, our people, and our children. Today, it’s not even worth talking about the few adventurers who led the attempt to overthrow the government. Their crime has been weighed, their guilt measured, and they will face appropriate punishment.
Today, the most shameful, cowardly, and unconscionable participants of yesterday’s events must face the consequences of what they sowed and tried to reap. I am talking about those radical leaders who actively participated in planning the crime, mobilizing people, and fueling hatred, and when they saw that the state coup had failed, they fled and are now trying to wash their hands of the perpetrators who directly resorted to violence. We must also not allow anyone to divert attention from the true nature of yesterday’s gathering. Society will no longer tolerate feigned naivety. Neither from Georgians nor foreigners. Every participant in yesterday’s gathering knew very well that at 4 p.m. they were going to overthrow the government. The time, place, plan, and goal were precisely set. The few thousand people gathered yesterday knew exactly where they were going and what they were doing.
These are the few thousand people, embittered about their own lives and their own country, who in March 2022, from the same place, demanded Georgia’s involvement in the Ukraine war; who in June 2022, from the same place, tried to hand over the government to foreign NGOs; who in March 2023, at the same place, threw the first Molotov cocktail; who were defeated in the October 2024 elections and, instead of accepting defeat, launched another failed attempt to destabilize the country. These are the few thousand people waving foreign flags, trading our country’s independence for submission to others.
It is symbolic that yesterday, these few thousand agitators waving foreign flags were defeated precisely at Freedom Square. After yesterday’s failed attempt at a state coup, we must not lose sight of the foreign propaganda support that backed yesterday’s attempt to overthrow the government. Throughout the day, a stream of disinformation flowed from Georgia on international media platforms, while inciting calls came from abroad from people who, no one doubts, were eagerly anticipating bloodshed and rubbing their hands in satisfaction. The culmination of this external support was seen in parallel with the storming of the President’s residence, when coordinated statements from well-known figures emerged, intended to provide external support for Maidanization. Note that neither before the crime was prepared, during its execution, nor after it, did any foreigner—whether a Brussels bureaucrat or an official from individual countries—not only condemn the violence and crime but even distance themselves from it. We only heard slogans supporting the crime and general, empty phrases about democracy and freedom, which sounded even more cynical against the backdrop of the mass crime that the whole world watched live.
Moreover, a few days ago, we heard a statement from the European Commission’s spokesperson, who expressed solidarity with the government overthrow gathering announced for October 4. Despite our repeated indications of the harmful nature of this statement, no one distanced themselves from it. Of course, society will not forget this open support and expects an explanation.
The deafening silence of the extremists, embraced by foreign financiers and patrons, regarding their failed violent overthrow attempt clearly shows the true value they place on democracy, human rights, and the peaceful development of the Georgian people.
The failed state coup attempt of October 4 must serve as the final warning for everyone, both inside and outside the country. Calls are already being made that yesterday’s attempt to overthrow the government was only a temporary failure and that they need to change tactics, continue provocations, and will definitely overthrow the government. It is hard to imagine greater cynicism, hatred, and a chronicle of declared betrayal of the homeland than what these people are orchestrating. However, the lesson of October 4 has been learned. Within the framework of the Constitution and the law, the Georgian government will do everything to ensure the country is protected, the people have peace, and Georgia and our children have a future. With calm, firmness, dignity, loyalty, and love, good has overcome evil,” stated Shalva Papuashvili.
