What we witnessed at the rally on October 4 practically reminded us of scenes from the 90s – the overthrow was announced, the overthrow began, but the overthrow quickly collapsed, stated Georgia’s Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili during a Bureau session.
According to him, during the events of October 4, 25 police officers were injured, two of them severely.
Papuashvili expressed gratitude to law enforcement and voters.
“I would like to congratulate everyone on the successfully conducted local self-government elections and congratulate the entire country. It is significant that the election cycle has concluded with this. Last year’s parliamentary elections, followed by the presidential election, and now the October 4 local self-government elections have fully staffed all elective constitutional bodies, providing an opportunity for the country to focus entirely on the development plans outlined by the winning team during both the parliamentary and local self-government elections for the next three years.
I also want to address the pre-announced gathering for an overthrow on October 4, parallel to the elections. We warned about this, and we saw that what was announced in advance did indeed take place – calls were made to overthrow the government, and so on. We watched it live on air, and it practically reminded us of scenes from the 90s, what we saw at the rally. This is thought-provoking for our society. There are a few hundred or a few thousand people in our society who gathered there that day with premeditated intent to destabilize the country, and these members of society were doing so with full awareness. The overthrow was announced, the overthrow began, but the overthrow quickly collapsed,” Papuashvili stated.
