“Though delayed—after a full year—one political group, one party, has recognized the will of the people, recognized democracy, and begun fulfilling its parliamentary mandate. It is regrettable that some parties have burned their bridges of retreat,” stated Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili during the plenary session.
According to him, members of “Gakharia – For Georgia” are attending today’s session, having “delayed swearing their deputy oath by a year.”
“Today, members of the ‘Gakharia – For Georgia’ party are present in the plenary hall and have begun exercising their parliamentary mandates, which is significant and welcome. This is a lesson that various convocations of the Georgian Parliament have learned multiple times. In 2016, there was an attempt to reject the election results, but in the end, everyone had to recognize the elections and the people’s will and start working in Parliament. In 2020, we saw attempts to deny the election results. It took some a year, others half a year, to realize they could not escape the people’s will, and eventually, they began fulfilling their mandates. In 2024, we witnessed the same attempt to turn away from reality and the people’s will. It is welcome that, though delayed—after a full year—one political group, one party, has recognized the people’s will, recognized democracy, and begun exercising its parliamentary mandate. It is regrettable that some parties have burned their bridges of retreat and may now very much want to be in Parliament, but they themselves have eliminated that possibility—primarily for their own voters, so that their voices could be heard in the Georgian Parliament. Therefore, I welcome our colleagues who have joined parliamentary activities today. Along with the documentation at your desks, the deputy oath is placed there, which you have delayed swearing by a year, but better late than never. Therefore, I ask you to sign this oath. I wish you to faithfully fulfill your parliamentary mandates in accordance with this oath,” Shalva Papuashvili stated.
