**Swedish Foreign Ministry Condemns Disinformation, but Georgian Speaker Questions Motives**
The Parliament Speaker of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, has fired back at the Swedish Foreign Ministry’s statement condemning disinformation spread against the European Union and its Ambassador in Georgia. However, instead of accepting their apology, Papuashvili questions the sincerity of their words.
**A Call to Action Uncondemned**
Papuashvili points out that the Swedish government member Erik Ottosson called on Georgian citizens to protest against the Georgian Dream party, which rules the country, back in November 2024. This statement has not been condemned by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, despite Papuashvili’s repeated calls for them to do so.
In his response to the Swedish statement, Papuashvili writes: “Until the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not condemn the call by its government member Erik Ottosson on November 11, 2024, to overthrow the Georgian government, it is insincere and not serious for the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to condemn anything in Georgia.”
**A Pattern of Behavior?**
Papuashvili’s comments suggest that he believes the Swedish Foreign Ministry is being hypocritical. By not condemning Ottosson’s statement, Papuashvili argues that they are not genuinely committed to promoting democracy and stability in Georgia.
This pattern of behavior has significant implications for Georgia-Sweden relations. If the Swedish government is willing to support actions aimed at overthrowing a democratically elected government, it raises questions about their commitment to democratic values.
**A Call for Transparency**
Papuashvili’s statement also highlights the need for greater transparency in international diplomacy. It is essential that countries clearly condemn actions that undermine democracy and stability, rather than selectively choosing which issues to address.
By questioning the Swedish Foreign Ministry’s motives, Papuashvili is pushing them to take a stronger stance on promoting democratic values. This debate will likely continue to unfold, with significant implications for Georgia-Sweden relations.
