It’s regrettable that it’s difficult to discuss improving Georgian-German relations with Mr. Peter [Fischer]. He managed, in just three years, to essentially destroy the best partnership established between Georgia and Germany over 30 years, stated Shalva Papuashvili, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, regarding Germany’s Ambassador Plenipotentiary to Georgia, Peter Fischer.
According to Papuashvili, Peter Fischer’s actions harm Germany the most.
“The point is that Mr. Peter’s [Fischer] such behavior harms Germany itself; it harms Germany less than Georgia. It’s regrettable that it’s difficult to discuss with Mr. Peter our Georgian-German relations improvement. He managed, in three years, to essentially destroy the best partnership established between Georgia and Germany over 30 years. You know that the Georgian people have a special respect toward the German state, including during the period of restoring our independence, due to the personal connections that existed between the then-governments and many other circumstances. In three years, this man managed to bring Georgian-German relations to the lowest point,” Papuashvili stated.
As the Parliament Speaker noted, if Peter Fischer is bothered by the accusations regarding his support for extremists, the solution is simple – he should not support the extremists.
“As for the statement by the spokesperson of Germany’s Foreign Ministry on this matter, if necessary, the spokesperson of Georgia’s Foreign Ministry will respond. As for Mr. Peter, who, it seems, is bothered by those accusations regarding his support for extremists, if these accusations bother him, the solution is very simple: Mr. Peter should not support extremists. All of this is happening before our eyes. I remind you that there exists an extremist group that attacked a member of the Georgian Parliament, a member elected by the Georgian people, together with a minor child, and assaulted Mariam Lashkhia, including with fascist chants. After that, Mr. Peter met these people at the embassy, expressed support for them, and said that these are Georgia’s future, that Georgia’s future is in good hands with them. The day after this meeting, the same group assaulted the ‘Georgian Dream’ Tbilisi headquarters, also with political violence and fascist chants. So, if Mr. Peter wants there to be no accusations against him regarding support for extremists, he should publicly distance himself from this extremist group just as publicly as he supported them by receiving them at the embassy and expressing public support.” Papuashvili declared.
