It seems that the German authorities have thought about the fact that the current ambassador, unfortunately, instead of acting as a bridge between governments, has chosen to act as a wall between our countries and governments, – the Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, said in a conversation with journalists regarding the recall of the German Ambassador, Peter Fischer, for consultations.
According to him, “the 30-year special partnership, unfortunately, has reached a very low point in the hands of the German Ambassador.”
“It seems that the German government has thought about the fact that the current ambassador, unfortunately, instead of acting as a bridge between governments, has chosen to act as a wall between our countries and governments. We saw attacks on the Georgian government and support for radical groups from his side, which was unfortunate. The 30-year special partnership, unfortunately, has reached a very low point in the hands of the German ambassador. Therefore, we hope that this is a signal for a reset. Of course, we are ready for our relations with Germany to return to where they deserve to be,” said Shalva Papuashvili.
Speaking on the same topic, the Speaker of the Parliament noted that this should be a good example for all ambassadors to “remain within the framework of their diplomacy, to ensure that they are a bridge, not a wall, for relations between their country and Georgia.”
“The fact that the German ambassador was recalled is important for us. I will not go into the rest of the details. Our positions, including those regarding the activities of the German ambassador, are known, which we have stated many times. We remain in this position, we have arguments for this position. We will not delve into the statements much further. It is important for us to reconsider. It is important for the ambassador to play the role of a bridge, not a wall. I think this should be a good example for all ambassadors to stay within the framework of their own diplomacy, to ensure that they are a bridge, not a wall, for relations between their country and Georgia.
We hope that this is a signal that the German government has thought and analyzed that the activities of the current ambassador only created difficulties in relations between the authorities,” the Speaker of the Parliament said.
For information, the German Foreign Ministry has issued a statement stating that the German Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, has been recalled for consultations.
