Today we are witnessing what happens when the regime achieves nothing and when its end begins, – the fifth President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, stated at the briefing.
In addition, Zurabishvili called on the public to stand together and show solidarity on October 26.
“Almost a year has passed since October 26. One year is a very painful year for society, because we have seen what is not only continuing but also becoming even more severe these days, hysterical repressions from the regime, hysterical repressions against a peaceful society. They tried to shift it to a non-peaceful scenario, but the regime did not succeed in this either, and by all means, by arresting, fining, and intimidating innocent people, they are trying to suppress the ongoing protest.
Repressions and new Russian laws continue. This Russian model applies to everything, and now we are waiting for the adoption of a law that will ban opposition parties and party members from political activities.
This is another stage in the development of this political repression and the Russian scenario, which we have seen during this year, although much more rapidly than we saw it in Russia at the time.
Georgia is entering Russian space, because sanctioned ships are entering here, carrying sanctioned oil. We are a way for Russia to bypass sanctions, and thus Georgia is becoming a kind of gray criminal zone where anything can happen.
During this one year, the regime has not achieved anything. It has not achieved the goal of breaking international isolation. It has not been able to suppress public protests, and it cannot govern the country. This country is no longer governed. This regime is repressive, but it is not a regime that governs the country, and most importantly, we are witnessing today what happens when the regime achieves nothing and when its end begins. This is an internal confrontation. No matter how much they “promote” anti-corruption, these are internal criminal disputes. Inside, there is complete distrust towards each other, towards Mr. Ivanishvili and his closest people. Any trust that was the basis of this so-called team no longer exists.
This is the last stage that we are looking at and we must prepare for the fact that it may continue for a while longer, but we need to be resilient against this repression, we need even more solidarity, which is our greatest quality and we are really showing it.
On October 26, we will all be together and once again express that protests do not disappear, that solidarity does not disappear and Georgia is permanent,” Salome Zurabishvili said.
