“Whom are you accusing of speaking against the country’s interests in Congress?! At a time when every step you take turns into a new disgrace for Georgia, damages the country’s reputation, and undermines trust,” – this is how the fifth president, Salome Zurabishvili, responds to the arrest of the leaders of the “United National Movement.”
According to her, the government is trying to intimidate and silence society by arresting political leaders.
Zurabishvili calls this an anti-Georgian policy.
“I want to respond to today’s completely shameful series of arrests. You have once again detained a political leader without cause and illegally. Do you really think that by doing this you will intimidate and silence the people?!
You have apparently carried out an internal score-settling against one of your own ‘team’s’ high-ranking officials and then arrested him on corruption charges, thinking that in this way you can cover up your own collective corruption! And whom are you accusing of speaking against the country’s interests in Congress?! At a time when every step you take turns into a new disgrace for Georgia, damages the country’s reputation, and undermines trust.
These steps include: arresting people for fabricated reasons; violence against activists and their detention for expressing their opinions; the baseless, successive arrests of political leaders; the exposure of your team’s boundless corruption; dirty internal score-settling using methods of the criminal underworld; insulting and accusing all our partners (including President Trump).
Isn’t all this an anti-Georgian policy?!
You are presenting our country to the world as if it were only a symbol of arrests, corruption, violence, deceiving friendly partners, and lack of principles. By this, you are trying to erase Georgia’s true face and values in the eyes of the world.
The responsibility for undermining Georgia’s interests in this way lies entirely and solely with you!” – writes Zurabishvili.
