“Georgian Dream” has become increasingly anti-American and pro-Russian. Its public positions have taken on an increasingly aggressive anti-American tone, stated Georgia’s fifth president, Salome Zurabishvili, during a hearing at the Helsinki Commission titled “From Partner to Problem: Georgia’s Anti-American Shift.”
According to Zurabishvili, “Georgian Dream” leaders are actively deepening ties with Russia, China, and Iran.
“I don’t want to dwell on describing the situation in Georgia. We all know, and it is widely reported in the media, that the situation is extremely difficult in terms of democratic rights, freedoms, and the condition of the people. Today, here, I also represent those who are in prison, and, symbolically, I want to mention Mzia Amaglobeli – a female journalist who is in prison without any reason…
In short, Georgia was a strategic victory for the U.S. over Russia, and a peaceful one. After Russia spent over a century trying to maintain exclusive dominance over the Caucasus and, consequently, Central Asia, America became a fully-fledged actor in the region, inspiring our people and setting new standards.
For the first time in over three decades, the ruling regime in Georgia has turned its back on this partnership. It is distancing and isolating itself and the country from a reliable partner while increasingly aligning with the adversaries of the U.S. Russia is playing to restore its dominant position.
‘Georgian Dream’ has become increasingly anti-American and pro-Russian. Its public positions have adopted an increasingly aggressive anti-American tone. Public attacks on U.S. representatives—I think the ambassador sitting behind me would agree. Attacks on American policy, accusing the U.S. of calling for the opening of a ‘second front’ against Moscow. Attacks on President Trump personally and on his administration.
In parallel, ‘Georgian Dream’ leaders are actively deepening ties, first and foremost, with Russia – mimicking the rhetoric of Russian leaders; with China – Anaklia, strategic partnership after halting strategic partnership with the U.S.; visa-free travel with China and Iran,” Zurabishvili declared.
