The EU should not only be able to monitor what is happening in the Georgian elections, what is happening in the Moldovan elections and how they protect themselves accordingly, or in our case, how we cannot protect ourselves from the massive manipulation of the elections, but the EU should be able to intervene, assist, support, prevent and analyze, – the fifth President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, stated in her speech at the Warsaw Security Forum – “The Next Chapter of EU Enlargement”.
According to her, it is clear that the old methods are no longer enough.
“The old classic observation missions that we saw during the last elections fail to detect the sabotage that Russia can carry out in neighboring countries, which is very well known to it and it has many opportunities to influence. Money, which is the main tool, but not only money, propaganda, disinformation, fake news, and for some reason Russia is better at these things today, maybe because the head of Russia, old and not old, they are always active employees of the KGB, so they know this psychological warfare and use it. For those of us who look from the outside at what the EU, this huge power, can do, the impression is that the EU is not using all its capabilities, is passive, waiting for us to overcome these challenges or not overcome them,” Zurabishvili noted.
According to her, Georgia was unable to overcome this challenge because, as president, she did not have the executive power to use services, information, to make it possible for the diaspora to participate in the elections, while Maia Sandu was able to protect the voices of the Moldovan people.
“But we need more support, more attention, more active attention to current events, and the EU must use all the opportunities it has, it must do more to support us politically and so that we can see, the people on the street can see, that while we are waiting for the future and enlargement, the EU exists, and if that means that the EU must find internal solutions, regarding the accession, this is what all of us expect, that the European Union should be able to do, and we believe in this and we believe in our common European future, Zurabishvili noted.
