The fight against disinformation is a common fight against a common enemy, the fifth President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, said in her speech at the Warsaw Security Forum.
“Information works against disinformation campaigns and technological means. Social networks also work, because regular communication channels have become direct targets. Today, there is a fear that the last opposition channels will be silenced. The first targets were regional journalists. Mzia Amaglobeli, a female journalist who was arrested. A police officer spat in her face and slapped her. She spent 8 months in pre-trial detention, and then was sentenced to 2 years in prison. She is one of the bravest journalists in the region, a region where we need journalists like this to win information battles. We really cannot win information battles, because all resources, NGOs and official channels are being targeted. Therefore, we have to use social networks, including TikTok,” Salome Zurabishvili said.
According to her, victory in the fight against disinformation and propaganda is impossible individually.
“We cannot win this fight alone. This is a common fight. Only the European Union and European countries can really develop strategies against disinformation, because Russia has been fighting with these strategies for a long time. All this was preceded by Soviet propaganda, and we should not forget that Putin is not a military leader, but the leader of the KGB. In order to deal with him, it is necessary to share the means of struggle. This is a common fight against a common enemy,” Salome Zurabishvili noted.
