Georgia’s Future in Transit Opportunities
Georgia has a great potential when it comes to transporting resources from Central Asia to Western markets. This could be of interest to the US and improve their strategic relations, but this is being hindered by the country’s current government policy.
A new initiative in the US Senate aims to counter China’s attempts to take control of important infrastructure like ports. In Georgia, a similar situation occurred when Bidzina Ivanishvili drove Western investors out of the Anaklia Port project and allowed China to be involved instead. This threatens the country’s strategic security and prevents it from developing its relations with the US.
According to Salome Samadashvili, a leader of the opposition parties “Strong Georgia” and “Lelo”, this situation is not only bad for the country but also contradicts the interests of its people. They have been working to bring back American investments in the Anaklia port and restart the project’s implementation process with Western assistance.
However, this cannot happen as long as Bidzina Ivanishvili remains in power. Samadashvili emphasized that it is extremely important for Georgia’s future to solve two issues: resuming its EU accession process and restarting strategic relations with the US. Achieving these tasks requires a change of government, making way for a legitimate and democratically elected one.
