Journalists Threatened in Serbia
Serbian authorities are being asked to take action after journalists were threatened while covering a gathering of the country’s ruling party. The event was held last Saturday.
The crew from N1 TV, Ksenija Pavkov and her cameraman, were verbally abused and threatened during their live coverage of the Serbian Progressive Party meeting in Sremska Mitrovica. This happened on a day when another event, a student protest, was taking place in Kragujevac.
Serbian Statehood Day was being celebrated on this day, with President Aleksandar Vucic speaking at an event that had been moved from Kragujevac to Orasac. Supporters were brought in from Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina to attend the gathering.
SafeJournalists, a network of journalists, condemned these threats and also mentioned that another journalist, Dinko Gruhonjic, has been receiving multiple threats on social media over the past week. He has been criticized by pro-regime media for months.
SafeJournalists called on Serbian authorities to take action against these threats and warned that physical assaults on journalists could happen at any time. They also asked President Vucic to stop insulting and lying about journalists and media outlets. The network further requested that the Information and Telecommunications Ministry use its powers to stop a smear campaign by pro-government media against independent journalists.
