**Russian Troops Break Through in Pokrovsk, Ukraine**
The city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine has been a hot spot in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Recently, Russian troops have made it into the city limits, according to reports from soldiers on the ground and the open-source battlefield monitoring group DeepState.
Pokrovsk is situated around 67 kilometers northwest of Russian-occupied Donetsk, making it a strategic target for Russia’s advance further into Donetsk Oblast and potentially threatening neighboring Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Ukrainian forces have been defending the city against repeated Russian infantry assaults, but the breach has prompted an urgent response to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.
A member of a Ukrainian drone team working out of Pokrovsk reported that Russian soldiers had made it into the city limits, although it is unclear if they have managed to dig in. DeepState noted that Russian forces exploited weakened Ukrainian infantry positions and inaccurate situational reporting to penetrate the city from the direction of Zvirove a few days earlier.
The breach has resulted in an ongoing cleanup operation, with Ukrainian forces suffering casualties and reports of friendly fire due to a lack of clear intelligence on the Russian troops’ movements and locations. DeepState warned that reports on such infiltration attempts should be approached with caution and confirmed data.
Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi has stated that Ukrainian troops are “steadfastly” defending Pokrovsk from repeated Russian infantry assaults, but the situation remains precarious. He warned that Russian troops are attempting to sever logistics routes from the northern city of Dobropillia and noted that Russian forces had massed over 110,000 troops in the area by early summer.
The fight for control of Pokrovsk is far from over, with both sides vying for dominance in the strategically important city. The Kyiv Independent will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
