**Russian Drone Attacks Rock Ukrainian Cities for Third Straight Night**
In the early hours of July 12, multiple explosions were heard in several cities across western Ukraine, including Chernivtsi, Lviv, and Lutsk. The attacks come as Russia’s tactics have shifted towards targeting areas considered relatively safe just a few months ago.
As reported by Kyiv Independent journalists on the ground, explosions were first heard around 3 a.m. local time in Chernivtsi, followed shortly afterwards by reports of drone sightings in Lviv. Public broadcaster Suspilne also confirmed an explosion in Lutsk at approximately 3:30 a.m.
The intensified air attacks are part of Russia’s growing strategy to target western regions of Ukraine. Local officials reported drones approaching Lviv, Ternopil, and Volyn oblasts early on July 12. Ukraine’s Air Force warned of dozens of attack drones heading towards areas along the country’s western border, with further ballistic missile attacks anticipated in the western part of the country.
Poland’s Air Force scrambled fighter jets to protect Polish airspace amid the attack. Unfortunately, no information was immediately available regarding any damage or casualties resulting from the assault.
This renewed attack comes just days after Russia launched its largest air assault yet on July 9, deploying a record-breaking 741 drones against Ukraine. The western city of Lutsk experienced what local officials described as the heaviest bombardment to date. A day later, Russian drones struck Chernivtsi, located just north of Ukraine’s border with Romania, killing at least two people and injuring 28 in Kyiv.
**Escalation and Response**
President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Russia intends to drastically escalate its drone attacks, potentially launching up to 1,000 drones per day. In an evening address on July 11, Zelensky announced the restoration of U.S. military aid shipments to Ukraine, including air defense weaponry.
U.S. President Donald Trump has condemned intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine and pledged additional shipments of weapons to support Ukrainian forces. The renewed aid comes as Russia’s tactics continue to evolve and intensify.
As a senior news editor for The Kyiv Independent, I can attest that these developments are being closely monitored by our journalists on the ground. The escalating situation will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences for Ukraine and its people.
