**US Opposes Ukraine’s UN Resolution to Avoid Antagonizing Russia**
The United States voted against a UN resolution condemning Russian aggression in Ukraine. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained the reason for this vote.
“We didn’t feel it was conducive, frankly, to have something out there at the UN that’s antagonistic to either side,” Rubio said.
This resolution was drafted by Ukraine and supported by all EU countries except Hungary. It reaffirmed Ukraine’s territorial integrity and named Russia as the aggressor. The US, Israel, Hungary, Russia, and Belarus voted against it.
**A Different Resolution Passes**
On the same day, a separate UN Security Council resolution passed. This one was drafted by the US and called for an end to the “Russia-Ukraine conflict” without criticizing Moscow’s actions. Ten out of 15 members of the Security Council voted in favor.
**Why Did the US Vote Against the Resolution?**
The US sent letters to other countries urging them to support the softer resolution, which aligns with broader US efforts to tone down language on Russia. This shift comes as US President Donald Trump pushes for a peace deal with Russia while increasingly criticizing Ukraine.
Trump has called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a “dictator” and falsely claimed that Ukraine started the war. He later acknowledged that Russia attacked, but said Ukraine shouldn’t have let it happen.
**Ukraine’s Situation**
The situation in Ukraine remains tense. Russian forces regularly attack Ukrainian cities and villages with drones, missiles, and artillery. The conflict has been ongoing for three years, with many casualties on both sides.
**Efforts for Peace**
There are efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine. A US-Russia deal is being considered, which would commit the US to supporting a free and sovereign Ukraine. However, this deal has not yet been signed.
