Romanian MEP Speaks Out on Presidential Elections
Siegfried Mureșan, a Romanian Member of the European Parliament, has spoken out about the recent presidential elections in his country. He says that what happened in Romania could happen anywhere.
In an X post, Mureșan said: “What happened in Romania can happen in any country. It happened in Moldova and Georgia too.” This was likely a reference to the fact that far-right candidates won in these countries’ presidential elections as well.
Mureșan also warned about the threat of Russia to democratic processes worldwide. He wrote: “Russia can threaten the democratic process of any country.”
The first round of Romanian presidential elections saw a surprise win by far-right candidate Călin Georgescu, who is critical of NATO and friendly towards Russia. Mureșan’s comments were likely aimed at warning about the dangers of extremism and keeping Romania on track with European values.
