Romania Passes Law to Shoot Down Drones Violating Its Airspace
On February 26, the Romanian parliament passed a law that allows the country to shoot down drones that enter its airspace without permission. This move comes after several incidents where Russian drones crashed onto Romanian territory while attacking Ukraine.
The new law states that unmanned aircraft flying in Romanian airspace without authorization can be destroyed or taken control of. The decision was made after finding wreckage from Russian drones near the Romania-Ukraine border.
“This is a measure to strengthen our defense!” said Abrudean Mircea, Interim Senate Chair, on Facebook.
Romania has been affected by Russia’s attacks against Ukraine and has scrambled F-16 fighter jets to protect its airspace. The country’s Defense Ministry published a draft law in October 2024 allowing Romania to shoot down aircraft violating its airspace.
The law will now go to interim Romanian President Ilie Bolojan for approval. This is not the first time Russian drone wreckage has been found in Romania, a NATO member state.
