**Ukraine to Import Gas from Europe**
Ukraine will buy up to 800 million cubic meters of gas from Europe in February and March. This is because Russian missile attacks have hit the country’s gas production facilities, reducing output by as much as 40%.
**Why Ukraine Needs to Import Gas**
Most of Ukraine’s main gas production facilities are located in frontline regions like Kharkiv and Poltava. These areas are vulnerable to Russian attacks. Before the war, Ukraine produced about 52 million cubic meters of gas daily. However, it needed 110-140 million cubic meters per day in winter.
**Ukraine’s Energy Situation**
The country had stored about 30 billion cubic meters of gas before the war. But this was only 10% of its storage capacity. Energy experts had warned that storage reserves were critically low. Ukraine’s Energy Ministry had estimated that the country would need to import around 1 billion cubic meters of gas by the end of the year.
**Naftogaz and DTEK Affected**
Russian forces have attacked and damaged facilities belonging to Naftogaz and private energy company DTEK at least twice in February. These companies are crucial for Ukraine’s gas production.
