US and Russia Resume Talks After Years of Tension
The US and Russia have resumed talks after a long break. The two countries had stopped talking in 2022 because of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Recently, top officials from both sides met in Istanbul for six hours. This meeting followed phone calls between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump earlier this month.
Both countries want to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, and also explore new business opportunities. But first, they are focusing on fixing their relationship.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that both sides agreed to take steps to keep embassies funded and diplomats working normally. This is after years of problems with funding and diplomats being expelled from each other’s countries.
Russia also asked the US to return six embassy properties in the US that were taken between 2016 and 2018.
The US State Department said they discussed stabilizing diplomatic missions, including staffing, visas, and banking services. However, there was no mention of resuming direct flights between the two countries.
Russia’s largest airline, Aeroflot, saw its shares rise 3.8% after the news came out.
