In a speech to the European Parliament, MEP Rasa Juknevičienė called on the EU to take serious action against Georgia’s government, led by billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili. The regime has been accused of cracking down on media freedom and opposition voices.
**A Symbol of Resistance**
Journalist Mzia Amaglobeli has become a symbol of the Georgian people’s resistance against the regime. Despite the EU’s silence, Juknevičienė believes that the Georgian people deserve support and respect from the European Union.
**Time for Sanctions**
Juknevičienė stated that serious sanctions are needed against the regime to put pressure on them to change their ways. She emphasized that the regime has the “genes of the Kremlin” and will not return to a pro-EU path. The MEP urged the EU to stop asking the regime to reform and instead demand new elections, which she believes are necessary for Georgians to take back control of their country.
**Independent Media Under Threat**
According to Juknevičienė, there is almost no independent media left in Georgia, with only propaganda channels like “Sputnik” operating freely. She questioned why individuals who spread misinformation about the EU are still active in the European Parliament.
