Public Defender Speaks Out Against Stigmatizing Comments

The Public Defender of Georgia has spoken out against a rise in comments that spread stereotypes about people with mental illness. These kinds of comments are not only hurtful but also promote racism.

Recently, there have been many cases where people with mental illness were made fun of or treated unfairly. Even some politicians have made derogatory comments about them. The Public Defender is calling on these politicians and public officials to stop making statements that spread stigma.

“Mental health patients are often treated unfairly and stereotypical attitudes from public figures make it hard for them to fit into society,” said the Public Defender in a statement.

In particular, the Public Defender was responding to comments made by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. He recently said of Nika Gvaramia, “He alleged he had mental health problems, but he got treatment and fixed his condition. It turns out he didn’t fix any problems.” The Public Defender is urging politicians to be more careful with their words and not make comments that spread stigma or hurt people’s feelings.
