The Georgian Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation into the illegal appropriation and embezzlement of a large amount of property belonging to the Georgian Technical University (GTU), according to a statement released by the Prosecutor’s Office.
According to the statement, the GTU rector approached the investigative agency with a request to start an investigation on October 17.
“Based on the statement of the rector of the Georgian Technical University, David Gurgenidze, the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the illegal appropriation and embezzlement of a large amount of property belonging to the Georgian Technical University through the abuse of official authority.
On October 17 of this year, the rector of the Georgian Technical University submitted a statement to the Prosecutor’s Office, pointing to facts of illegal privatization of real estate (land plots, buildings, and sports fields) located at 77 Kostava Street, Tbilisi, owned and used by the Georgian Technical University, in favor of LLC ‘Georgia University.’
The investigation was initiated on October 24 by the Department for Combating Corruption Crimes of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia under Article 182, Part 2, Subparagraph ‘d,’ and Part 3, Subparagraph ‘b’ of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
The public will be periodically informed about the progress of the investigation and the relevant legal assessments,” the statement reads.
